“Where the Cartel erred, we will not. We will not only work from the shadows, we will become the shadows. The umbra is the darkest part of the shadow, a place where no light can penetrate, and that's what we'll be. We will be the UMBRA, and the world will bow to our every whim.”--Dread

Autumn, along with the other last surviving members of the Earth Crime Cartel, are asked to go on a suicide mission to Mars. If they succeed, all records of their existence will be wiped clean. If they refuse, they'll be hunted down and executed for their crimes. So what's a bounty-hunter to do?

Too bad the Martians have left a little surprise for Autumn and her rag-tag gang of rogues on their ship. Yeah, it's gonna be bumpy ride back home to say the least. Heads will roll and blood will spill as you watch the rise of UMBRA.

My Five Star review of: Rise of Umbra
Written by Jay Michael Wright the 2nd
This story had some wonderful story telling. The characters were each very distinct in mannerisms and description. Nothing better than a story that flows and is supported so well by interesting and well thought out dialogue, action and a high amount of intensity. The main characters Sive and Autumn are two that will resonate with me a long time being dark in action, interesting in banter and supportive as a team that worked together as only partners who care about each other if properly portrayed can be felt by the reader (me). This story is dark and brooding and took place in the believable ambience of space and other planets in what could very well be our future. The building of the team in the first chapter was reminiscent of the “Dirty Dozen” or possibly more relatable to today’s movies such as the “Suicide Squad”. Basically Anti Heroes who are flawed in both morality and ethics while being great at serving a specific task in the story. The writer takes all these characters who are inherently flawed and redeems them in task that kept me riveted for three nights of reading. The description of the spaceships while travelling or in action reminded me of “Firefly’ where the crew was bounty hunters or just people on the run looking to survive. I actually could imagine the space travel, taste the action and feel the intensity while laughing at the witty dialogue and snarkiness especially from my favorite character Autumn. This full length novel was a first for this writer and certainly felt like a natural, flowing full length story as can only be told by a veteran of full length novels. My hats off to the writer and I look forward to reading more from him.

The Rise of UMBRA eBook Jay Michael Wright II Loraine Van Tonder Charlotte Santiago Cowie Reviews

From the first sentence this story sucks you down a rabbit hole of fun and adventure.
The characters are all bad-ass, but well rounded. Autumn is my favorite, she's smart, sexy and can kick some serious ass.
The mash-up of genres is seamlessly done with humor and action.
This is one of the very few futuristic sci-fi books I've ever read. Nothing says epic than your very own personal stealth generator!! This book had me glued from the first page. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend. The author has an amazing imagination! Looking forward to reading the next one!
Little bit of a SPOILER ALERT.

So I'll start with the "spoiler" The book ends in a huge cliffhanger.

I really liked this story. I loved the mashup between science fiction and fantasy, something that was definitely unexpected. The plot is well thought out and the characters quite the entertaining bunch. The book had a couple of unexpected turns and just enough mystery to keep the reader wanting more. The action was great, the kick butt scenes adding just the right amount of umph. Definitely a quick read.
Ordered book! It's a masterpiece! Writer is ahead of his time!
It was a great read. It touches all the nestalgia from my days of future style roleplay games like cyberpunk 2020, shadowrun, and rift. The book has a strong feel like firefly and the few episodes of dark matter that I have seen. It's a shame the characters I get attached to die but we must kill the ones we love. I look forward to see what are twisted author has instore for us the reader next.
I just finished The Rise of Umbra and the only thing I can say is Wow! What a fun and amazing book! It was so full of action and characters that I just loved. As it's set in the future I love all the "past" references that are my present. I can't wait until Jay comes out with a sequel. I'll be the first to buy it. I started it yesterday and it was almost impossible to put down. It sucked me in from the first. I highly recommend this book!
The Rise of UMBRA is a fast-paced space heist novel full of action, violence, and swearing. Since I like all those things, it should be no surprise I enjoyed this book. Wright has created a believable not-to-far-distant future in which we have colonized Mars, and now on the red planet, s**t is about to horribly awry. This is a fun, gritty read about a motley crew of criminals who set out on one dangerous mission, only to find out there is way more going on. I don't put spoilers in reviews, but I will say that it is my understanding the author intends to write more in this universe, and I will be there to read it when he does. Because there are plenty of new seeds sprouting at the end that definitely need room to grow into further adventures. Left me wanting more. 5 Stars.
